On May 11, Professor Shi Qinghua, Chief Scientist of the National Major Scientific Research Program and the National Key Research and Development Program and recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, was invited to give an academic report for teachers and students in the Medical College of our university. The conference was chaired by Professor Gong Aihua, Vice President of Medical College. Some teachers and postgraduates of Medical College listened to the report.
The report is entitled "The genetic basis of meiotic abnormalities in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia". Professor Shi Qinghua introduced the important research progress of meiosis abnormality in human azoospermia patients, pointing out that gene mutation blocking sperm meiosis is an important factor leading to male infertility. Professor Shi Qinghua discovered a series of new genes that regulate and interfere with meiotic chromosome behavior through studying the modification made by CRISPR/Cas9 system. After the meeting, the participants enthusiastically discussed the pathogenesis of meiotic abnormalities and the means of intervention and treatment. Professor Shi answered the questions raised by the teachers and students, which made the students have a clear understanding of human azoospermia.
Shi Qinghua is a professor and doctoral supervisor. Born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, in 1964, he was elected to the 100-person Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. He returned to China to serve as professor and doctoral supervisor of PI and Life Sciences College of Hefei National Laboratory of Micro-scale Material Sciences, China University of Science and Technology. Currently, he is the chairman of Anhui Cell Biology Association, vice-chairman of Anhui Medical Heredity Branch of Chinese Medical Association, vice-chairman of Anhui Environmental Mutagen Society, vice-chairman of Cell Structure and Function Branch of Chinese Cell Biology Association, etc. He served as the executive editor or editor of PloS One, Heredity, China Journal of Cell Biology and Life Sciences. In the past 10 years, as the first or correspondent author, more than 30 SCI papers have been published in the journals of Nature, American Journal of Human Genetics, Cell Research, Journal of Molecular Cell Biology, Cell Cycle, Bioinformatics and Nucleic Acids Research, which have been cited nearly 2000 times.
